Just a few days ago, the Addis Ababa Administration Youth Forum declared its plan to hold a two hundred thousand-strong anti-Sodomite demonstration in the capital Addis Ababa.
Wait, an anti-Sodomite demonstration?
The Youth Forum considers “gebresedomawinet” (an Amharic for “Sodomy”) to have reached an alarming stage in the country, and that the situation calls for a demonstration to alert the society, as well as the government.
“Oh, finally!,” you would say, seeing that a responsible body is going to speak up about those Sodomites, and their rampant homosexual rapes and pedophilia crimes in the country.
Well not quite, especially if you’re gay and from Ethiopia.
The word sodomy, in homophobic Ethiopia, is also misinterpreted for homosexuality. The homosexual rapes, pedophiliac offenses, and all other sins of the Sodomites are tightly associated with same-sex relationships.
Actually, this wrong association of homosexuality with the Sodomites is what’s keeping alive society’s aversion and existing penal codes against same-sex relationships.
And neither is the upcoming anti-Sodomite demonstration free from this fallacy – it is anti-gay as it can get.
The question is: shall we still march with the Youth Forum since, in essence, we’re also against Sodomy – people who rape, are pedophiliac, and do other harmful things to others?
Yes, we shall but only with one condition; we’ll have to march with two slogans: one denouncing the Sodomites, the other urging that gays are not Sodomites.
At least that way, not only would we speak up against the sexual offenders but also the human-rights offenders, who are also inflicting as much harm on innocent people.
Then again, if only the government and the protesters would allow us to march freely amongst them .

With regards to one of your final points: It’s not just a civilized society’s obligation to respect human rights, but it should also be in the best interest of every just and democratic society to protect minority rights, such as LGBT rights.

According to the Bible, marriage is ordained by God to be between ” a man and a woman” (Genesis 2:21-24; Matthew 19:4-6). Gay marriage/same-sex marriage is a perversion of the institution of marriage and an offense to the God who created marriage.
In one of your reply to Mr. Fikru, you’ve said that he’s spreading hatred in the name of God. However, you may want to think what you have said…..he has a great point if you read it carefully.
As a person that follows Jesus Christ, i am telling you the truth in love and contend for truth with “gentleness and respect”. You may be hating the rest of the world for telling you to stop & be the person you were created for.
You may also be wishing that they die in some way. Brother, being gay/lesbian is Sin! Before its too late and the door shuts become the person you were created for so that God may forgive your sin and puts you in his loving arms.

First Corinthians 6:9 states that homosexuals are unrighteous and will not inherit the kingdom of God. Since both homosexual desires and actions are condemned in the Bible, it is clear that homosexuals “marrying” is not God’s will, and would be, in fact, sinful.

Thanks for taking time to write all that. Really, I appreciate your care but you got to know that not everybody follows the teachings of the Bible, and even within those who follow it exist different interpretations. That’s why it is wrong to even allow a society’s moral and ethical values be determined by religious convictions.

I am amazed by the extreme homophobia expressed by our people with just a snippet of it shown in these comments…and then to go on to excuse this hateful language with a few bible verses? I see several people, including members of my own family who are taking things that are cultural taboos and mixing them with religious legalism so they have a basis for their homophobia. If we are truly being biblical here, where have you ever seen Jesus express such hatred towards anyone? And if you do believe that homosexuality is a sin, doesn’t the new testament state that all sins are equal? (Let’s not forget that sins listed in the bible include: anger, boasting, gluttony, dishonesty, divorce, lust, greed,etc.) I would suggest that some of you focus on your own spiritual walk which should reflect God’s love and grace instead of quickly spouting your cultural interpretations of bible verses (“Do not judge, or you too will be judged….Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?” Matt 7:1,3). At the end of the day, whether or not you personally agree with homosexuality does not matter. Someone else’s sexual orientation is really not your business. Humans are human first, and everyone deserves basic human rights.

My wife and I have travelled to Ethiopia a few times and really enjoyed your beautiful country and people. We are actually planning to come back in the next couple of years. Though, neither one of us will want to travel and spend our time and money in a country that treats their gay citizens viciously. Gay people are weaved through the fabric of every society for the better and should be treated equally. Please reconsider these ugly demonstrations and laws.

I never said that Ethiopia is dependent on my wife and I visiting your beautiful country. I simply stated that we would not want to visit a country that treats its LGBT citizens unequally or cruelly.
